My first African friend is Awan from South Sudan. He told me that his first foreign friend is a Chinese worker who built a bridge near his living place in his hometown, Rumbek. Our friendship and experiences reflect a long history of China-South Sudan relations. I believe people to people exchanges will result in profound insights and deepened understanding.

Over students and 90 staff members participated in the festivities. The whole school community united in the ultimate goal of providing an education for their fellow students in South Sudan. From the bright neon green worn by the First Years, right up to the more understated blue of the Sixth Years, students from different year groups combined colourfully for their official school photograph — each out-posturing and out-posing one another in all of the colours of the rainbow.

Yesterday I had the chance in a senior leadership dialogue on sexual and gender-based violence with the Minister for Gender and other senior government and civil society representatives. I am travelling tonight to Ethiopia where I will attend the Tana Forum on peace and security and also discuss UN support to the South Sudan peace process with leaders of the region and representatives of the Opposition. Let me first thank the government and people of South Sudan for their warm welcome and the construction engagement that has guided our discussions.
